Listen: Raymond Shields ‘gutted’ as Donegal League bow out on penalties

A ‘gutted’ Raymond Shields said he felt ‘horrible’ after seeing the Donegal League’s Oscar Traynor hopes fade in a penalty shoot-out last night.

It was late in the night when Limerick League overcame Shields’ Donegal 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Gweedore.

“I’m gutted for the boys,” Shields told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“It’s a horrible way to go. It’s a lottery in penalties. Someone had to lose. It’s the kick of a ball when it comes to penalties. It was fine margins.

“I feel horrible. I know that we could have gone further in the competition.”

Shane Clarke had fired Limerick in front two minutes into the second half, only for Ronan McHugh to level things up.

Shields and Donegal were left to reflect on missed chances.

The Kilmacrennan man said: “If we had taken our chances in the first half, it wouldn’t have gone to penalties. If we could only have had one goal early, we’d be having a different interview.”
