Letterkenny AC: Athletes brave the cold for Lifford 5K

The thaw, which came too late for Saturday’s Letterkenny Parkrun, fortunately, arrived for Sunday morning.

This allowed the third and final event in the popular and well organised Lifford Strabane AC 5K Series, to go ahead.

The Lifford 5K attracted 151 runners and was won by Jack Moore, Carmen AC, in 16.02.

Prizes were awarded on the basis of performances in the three events. The other two were the 5Ks in Carrigans and in Raphoe.

Letterkenny Athletic Club’s runners were both among the prize winners.  Barry Mackey had an excellent run and recorded his best run out of the three when he clocked 18.50. He had run 18.59 in Carrigans and 19.06 in Raphoe.

Barry’s three fine performances saw him pick up 2nd prize in the M55 category. Brian McBride had an excellent run and finished in 23.23. That gave Brian 3rd prize in the M60 category.

Fionnuala Diver, getting back to her best after a troublesome injury,  followed up last week’s excellent display in the Northern Ireland and Ulster Masters’ Cross Country Championship, with another convincing performance.

She had a fine run in the Athletics Ireland Masters’ XC Championship in Dundalk.

Fionnuala was to the fore in the F40 category.

Sean McFadden put his renowned endurance to the test during the week and, as usual, passed with flying colours.

In his temporary home country of Dubai, he participated in the ‘Ironman’ event.  McFadden finished in 15th place out of 305 in the M40 category.

His time for the swim was 32m15s then 2.15.36 for the cycle. After all that, he still managed a tremendous time of 1.32.52 for the Half Marathon.
