Gareth Harkin says Finn Harps must use Friday night’s performance against Dundalk as a benchmark.

Harps held the champions to a one-all draw in front of 1,878 fans, to pick up a first point of the 2019 season.

Harps looked like they might sneak a famous win after Keith Cowan headed them in front, but Brian Gartland equalised for Dundalk in the 70th minute.

“It’s a massive result,” Harkin told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“I can’t remember the last time we got a result against them, even a draw in any competition.

“To compete with them for so long, we’re disappointed we didn’t hold out in the end up.

“They set the standard every year. A point’s a great result in the end up

We hung in there. We knew there’d be times where we just had to hang on.”

Harkin, who once again at the captain’s armband against the Lilywhites, believes Harps must channel Friday’s display into a busy period that begins on Monday night with an away assignment against St Patrick’s Athletic.

He said: “There was a lot of togetherness there. We had to sustain a lot of pressure. We’re used to that and we can dig in. We can build on that.

“That’s the standard we need to compete at in every game. We’ve set ourselves a marker now.”
