Coleman hopes Gibraltar can cause some shocks after 50th Irish appearance

Seamus Coleman hopes that Gibraltar can shock some of Ireland’s Group D opponents in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Jeff Hendrick netted the only goal of the game as Ireland claimed a narrow 1-0 win at the Victory Stadium.

In their only other two previous games against Gibraltar, Ireland won 7-0 and 4-0.

“I would love to see them take points from teams and hopefully they can do,” Coleman said after winning his 50th Irish cap.

The players afterwards were happy with how they’d performed. They’re giving it their all too and thankfully we got the win.

“International football is definitely getting harder. Teams sit back and it’s getting harder to break teams down.”

Roy Chipolina almost gave Gibraltar the lead, but a superb Darren Randolph save kept the deadlock intact before Hendrick struck at the other end.

“It was tough, but it was the same for both teams and we got over the line.

“We definitely would have liked to be more comfortable, I’m not going to try to butter it up any different, but (we got) three points. We look forward to Georgia now and hopefully we can get three points again.”

Coleman captained Ireland in their first game back under Mick McCarthy’s management and the Boys in Green face Georgia on Tuesday night in Dublin.

The Killybegs man said: “Fifty caps for your country is a massive achievement and I’ll look forward to hopefully my 51st if the manager picks me against Georgia.

“Georgia is going to be a sticky game home and away as well. It’s a tough group and we’ll just take one game at a time, that old cliche.

“We’re not taking Georgia for granted – they are a good side and they’re getting better with every campaign as well.”
