Confirmed: Bernie Moran to run for Fine Gael in Letterkenny Electoral Area

A LEADING local businesswoman and healthcare professional has been as a Fine Gael candidate for the Letterkenny area in May’s county council elections.

Bernie Moran, of Loughnagin, Letterkenny (43), will join sitting councillor Jimmy Kavanagh on the Fine Gael ticket after a party meeting in Letterkenny last night.

She says she will be a strong voice on Donegal County Council committed to delivering positive changes that will help the lives of individuals, families and communities in the Letterkenny electoral area.

“I believe my background in healthcare and in education provision gives me a real understanding of the challenges facing families in Donegal on a daily basis. This is why I have decided to stand in the local elections on May 24th as a Fine Gael candidate.

“Women are hugely under represented on Donegal County Council, comprising just ten per cent of sitting councillors.Women and men bring a different perspective to the table and a fairer gender balance will better reflect the views and needs of our community.

“If elected I will serve the whole community and represent the interests of the entire electoral area, urban and rural, individuals and families, business and the farming community. My experience as a nurse, as a mother in the home, as an employer and provider of preschool educational services, gives me a real understanding of the challenges facing families in Donegal on a daily basis.

“Work-life balance, access to affordable childcare, healthcare services, education and disability supports and are issues I am passionate about.  This is why I have decided to run in the local elections.”

Ms Moran says working with Minister Joe McHugh at a national level and sitting on Donegal County Council at a local level will help deliver a better quality of life and better services for everyone in the area. She says Fine Gael represents traditional Irish values while incorporating diversity, equality and inclusion, giving a voice to all.

“My aims will be achieved through liaising with the public, in depth research of issues and hard work.  I am a very determined person who believes it is not enough for local politicians to just identify problems.  I am not afraid to role my sleeves up and work hard and I believe in tackling issues head on with solution focused politics,” she said.

Bernie says Letterkenny will continue to grow in the years ahead and being in Fine Gael will help deliver the infrastructure needed for a growing population.

“Fine Gael has been good for Donegal. I was heartened to hear the Taoiseach re-emphasising his commitment to the North West in his speech on Saturday night. Ireland 2040 designates Letterkenny with official city status and the Letterkenny area needs strong voices at Council level to roll out the delivery of the Government’s commitment,” she said.

“The Bonagee by-pass, the Letterkenny-Lifford 4-lane road connecting to the A5 will transform this area.

“We have a strong voice in Joe McHugh at cabinet and that needs to be matched on Donegal County Council with active, vocal councillors. I look forward to the challenge ahead and to meeting with as many of those living in the areas as possible in the coming weeks to ask for their support and No 1 vote on May 24.”
