Two children are being kept in Letterkenny University Hospital overnight following an incident earlier at the Aura Leisure Centre.
One young boy is in the hospital’s intensive care unit and another young boy is in the paediatric ward and will be kept overnight for further assessment.
The families of the two boys have confirmed that the injuries are not life threatening.
The emergency plan at the hospital was put in place for a short time and stood down some time later following the incident, which occurred around noon.
A large fleet of emergency services personnel rushed to the scene when several people, most of them children, fell ill after taking a reaction to the water.
Up to 60 children were assessed and treated on-site after the entire centre evacuated.
Six children presented to LUH showing various symptoms. One was admitted to ICU with others in the paediatric department.
At least two of those are being kept in overnight, their families have confirmed.
A statement posted on the Aura Letterkenny Leisure Centre social media pages earlier claimed that ‘they have since been released’.
A parent, who was in the viewing gallery at the time, described witnessing ‘a green liquid spraying into the pool’.
“My three children were in the pool and my son said he was diving when he saw a dark fluid coming out in the pool under the water,” one mother told Donegal Daily.
The Aura explained the incident in a statement: ‘Earlier today an issue arose where backwash (which is pool water that is contained in the filtration system) leaked back into the pool which caused some cloudiness and gave rise to foul odours.’
Emergency services described the scene as a ‘major incident’ to this website, while a subsequent statement from the Aura group noted a ‘minor incident’ and added: ‘purely as a precautionary measure the ambulance services were alerted’.
