Picture special: Dramatic scenes as gorse fires rage in West Donegal

An amazing community response in West Donegal saw locals battle raging gorse fires, which threatened homes in the area.

Firemen, civil defence, Gardai as well as hundreds of locals battled from 8am until the evening to bring the fires at Annangry and Loughanure under control.

An Air Corps helicopter dropped more than 42,000 litres of water onto the smouldering gorse to bring the fires under control.

The battling crowd included hundreds of local people.
