Aaron Doherty joins up with Donegal senior football squad

Aaron Doherty has started training with the Donegal senior football squad – and could be a part of Declan Bonner’s Championship plans. The Naomh Columba man trained with Donegal last night for the first time, Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub can reveal. In November, Doherty – who is still under-20 – decided to inform county management that he was concentrating on soccer in 2019. While Doherty is a part of the Finn Harps Under-19 squad, the Teelin native hadn’t seen much game time with Harps of late. Previously, Doherty had been on the books of Harps at Under-17 level. Doherty was last year tipped as one of the ‘twenty rising starts to shine by 2020’ by the Irish Daily Star.
Doherty had been part of the Donegal U20s squad in 2018, only to leave the panel for a period before returning for the Championship, although he didn’t see game time for Gary McDaid’s side. In August, he scored 2-11 for Glen against Naomh Conaill in the Southern Board Minor League final Last weekend, Doherty clipped five points against Killybegs and four against St Naul’s in Division 2 for Naomh Columba.

Bonner has also called up Naomh Conaill forward Eoghan McGettigan. Last week, McGettigan joined the senior ranks for the first time and, like Doherty, is now vying for a place in the Championship plans. The Donegal squad has lost the services of Martin O’Reilly, Conor Morrison and Martin McElhinney this year, while Odhrán Mac Niallias has confirmed that he won’t be rejoining for the summer.
