Kilmacrennan’s own Rhys Irwin has been retained for a second season with the Road to Moto GP BTC programme, it has been announced.

This is a programme ran by Moto GP’s Dorma to promote the best Teen Motorcycle racers from around the World. For 2019 Rhys is again the only racer from the Republic to hold a coveted position and will race No. 15 in the series.

Such is the belief in Rhys that the Motorcycle Union of Ireland for a second year are supplying Rhys with a Honda Moto 3 as a practice bike to contest the Standard Moto 3 BSB Championship in the UK.

Rhys will have the opportunity to race in The Czech Republic Moto GP track Brno, Valencia in Spain, Assen in Holland and the UK Moto GP rounds.

He said: “I am really excited about the 2019 series. I had a great first race qualifying 4th and getting a solid 5th place finish in both races with only 0.182 of a sec to the leader the closest race seen as yet in the BTC.

“It was great to see my national flag on the results board,” said Rhys.

“I have trained hard over the winter months and am in peak physical and mental condition. Motorcycling Ireland committee members for supplying me with a practice bike for the BSB.

“Thanks to Wesley Regan of Clean Rubber and James Gallagher of Oasis Bar Letterkenny, BJT (UK) my primary sponsors, also to DS waste Kilmacrennan, James Gibbons & Son Electrical, Eamonn Medlar Racing, Motorcycling Ireland and Mondello Park.”
