Letterkenny Triathlon Club: Bumper Bank Holiday of racing for 24/7!

written by Stephen Maguire May 8, 2019
FacebookTweetLinkedInPrint

May Bank Holiday is always a busy one for 24/7 and 2019 was no different with club members in action at Burtonport Duathlon, Liam Ball Sprint Triathlon and locally in the Annual NW10K!

Those not racing took advantage of the extra day of training!

Liam Ball Sprint Triathlon

Hosted by North West Triathlon Club, Liam Ball Sprint Triathlon is always a popular sprint race for club members looking to kick off their triathlon season. Eight club members travelled to Derry on Sunday morning to take part.

Shaun McDevitt, who was also in action at the Burtonport Duathlon on Friday night, was the first club member to finish in a very impressive time of 1:07:59.

Shaun had a brilliant swim of 14:40 to set him up for a great race, finishing 11th overall. Stephen Sweeney was next in a brilliant time of 1:14:30.

Stephen also had a great swim and had a strong performance in both the bike and run disciplines, looking well ready for his Sheephaven Half target later in the Summer.

Following on from her superb performance at last weekend’s Super Sprint in Letterkenny, Natasha Adams was back in action taking on her very first sprint triathlon.

Natasha once again had a very impressive performance, finishing on the podium once again! Natasha crossed the finish line in 1:16:01 taking the prize for 3rd female.

Ciaran Callaghan also had a brilliant 2019 triathlon debut racing very well and finishing the event in a fantastic 1:20:09.

Eamonn Patton also took on his 2nd triathlon in the space of a fortnight and had another fine performance. Eamonn finished in a brilliant time of 1:22:02.

Christy Callaghan raced well crossing the finish line in 1:32:51. Suzanne Bogan wasn’t too far behind and as consistent as always had a brilliant race clocking a finish time of 1:33:45.

It wasn’t to be for Mary Harkin in Derry- despite having a brilliant swim, Mary was very unfortunate to pick up a puncture on the cycle route and so becomes the first club DNF of the year!

Mary didn’t dwell on the disappointment for too long and promptly made her way to Letterkenny to take on the NW10K, and in a fantastic time too.

 Burtonport Duathlon

On Friday night, three club members travelled to Burtonport to take part in the Burtonport Duathlon. Shaun McDevitt had a great race finishing in a brilliant 3rd overall in a time of 38:25.

It was an unfortunate night for young Ben Carr who finished in 44:52- despite leading the race from the off, Ben took a wrong turn, after being instructed to do so, resulting in an additional 2k to his first run.

After the event, the organizers of the event were quick to praise Ben for his sportsmanship and his great attitude, noting how he stayed for prizegiving, supporting his fellow club members and said he was a great ambassador for his club. Ben’s Dad Enda was a little closer than normal to Ben on race day and finished in a time of 45:51.

North West 10k

39 club members competed in the Annual North West10k on Sunday. Conditions were much more favourable than 2018 with the drop in temperatures over the weekend suiting all those taking on the 10k route.

Paul Cullen was the first club member to cross the finish line at Letterkenny Community Centre.

Paul has had an incredible 2019 season so far, and, his running has gone from strength to strength with PB’s in 7 out of his last 8 outings.

Sunday was no different and Paul looked on a mission from the off, setting a blistering pace and achieving yet another PB in a superb time of 36:01, finishing 13th overall and 3rd M40.

A total of 1minute and 49seconds off his previous 10k PB. Gavin Crawford was 29seconds behind in a fantastic time of 36:30. Charmain Liam Tinney is also in superb form at the minute and after his fantastic 5k PB on Tuesday night was on the hunt for a 10K PB also.

He had a brilliant race on Sunday and crossed the line in a fantastic PB time of 38:01, knocking a minute off his previous PB but 4minutes off his previous best on the NW10course.

Paul Doherty, despite nursing an injury had a brilliant run crossing the finish line in 39:02.

Terence Diver ran very well clocking 39:42 with Jason King just 20 seconds behind in 40:02. After her Sub 20 5k time on Tuesday night Fionnuala Larkin was back in cracking form on Sunday and ran a big PB of 42:25.

Brian Gormley was 21seconds behind, clocking a PB of 42:46.

John McFadden raced well and crossed the line in a brilliant 42:59. Margaret Kelly looked comfortable throughout and finished strongly in 43:12. Philip Browne had another PB on Sunday, clocking a super 43:15 for the 10k route. Coach Ciaran O’Donnell had another fine run finishing in 43:31.

Anne Robinson is another member in superb form. Coming into Sunday’s race Anne was unwell, but she put in a brilliant performance and even managed to PB in a time of 45:45.

Enda Carr, taking on his 2nd race of the weekend had a fine run, clocking 47:26. Kilian Nulty raced very well also, crossing the finish line in 47:43.

Terence Quinn ran his 2nd PB in the space of a fortnight. After PB’ing at the Madrid Half Marathon last weekend, he ran another PB on Sunday, clocking 47:53.

Ita McGettigan was back in racing action and finished in a brilliant 47:59. The other half of the Raphoe Duo, Raj Mehan is also in great form and ran a brilliant PB of 48:18.

Emmet McClafferty had a brilliant run and finished in 48:48, a super PB, with Martin Robinson,48:57, and Tommy Hill,48:58, in close succession behind him.
