CCTV sought for Letterkenny areas hit by anti-social behaviour

Letterkenny councillor Jimmy Kavanagh is calling for CCTV to be installed in busy residential areas which have been plagued with anti-social behaviour.

The areas of Beechwood, Ard O’Donnell and Ashbrook have experienced ‘consistent and persistent’ issues recently, including having windows smashed, as Cllr Kavanagh pointed out at today’s Letterkenny MD meeting.

He said: “This is a residential area of the town with a lot of old people living there as well. It is an area that people are going through all the time on their way to the town. We have gangs of youth heading down the town and people coming home from pubs passing through.

“This very consistent problem is very unfair on the residents.”

In their response, the council said that Letterkenny Chamber and gardaí are applying to extend CCTV in the town, but under GDPR it is not advised to have systems in residential areas.

Cllr Kavanagh asked for the council to progress the application for CCTV, while Cllr Ciaran Brogan said a meeting should be called with Letterkenny Gardaí to increase community policing resources.
