Lagan Harps crowned Donegal Women’s League U12 champions

In a highly-contested final game between themselves and Gweedore United, Lagan didn’t get it all their own way.

Both teams were unbeaten going into the final game.

Gweedore United had won their nine previous games with Lagan Harps winning eight and drawing one.

A draw would have been enough for the Gweedore girls to take the crown.

Lagan took the lead after seven minutes when Orlaith Doherty set up Sophie Canning for a fine strike.

The Gweedore defence of Neasa Ferry, Seana Curran and Emma McCool were outstanding throughout the game.

On 15 minutes, a great cross by Niamh Ryan set up Aileen Sweeney who had her effort saved by Gweedore’s keeper Maria Gallagher.

There was a great battle in midfield with Aine Ferry/ Mary Ann Ward for Gweedore with Aisling Mugan and Sophie Canning, however, anything the tricky Mary Ann Ward got away Niamh Ryan was on hand for Lagan to cut out the danger.

Amy Doherty in the Lagan net was tested by Brianna Ferry on 22 minutes and the rebound was cleared by Kelsey Gallagher.

Rosie Gallagher was through on 24 minutes for Lagan but her shot was just wide.

Mary Anne Ward linked up with Fia Coyle soon after but Scarlet Keys cleared the danger.

As the second half pushed on gaps were beginning to appear.

A mix up in the Lagan defence saw the ball fall to the dangerous Mary Ann Ward, who slotted the ball in past Amy Doherty in the Lagan goal on 52 minutes.

With a draw enough for Gweedore, the large crowd began cheering.

However, Lagan were not finished with Sorcha Keys making a great tackle at left back pasted to Sophie Canning in midfield who past outright to Niamh Ryan.

The moment arrived. Ryan rounded the defender and, from a tight angle, slotted ball in past the Gweedore keeper to secure the title.
