THERE WERE gold medals for Sommer Lecky and James Kelly at the Irish Life & Health U20 and U23 Championships in Tullamore this afternoon.
The Finn Valley duo led the way on a good day at the office for Donegal athletes.
Lecky, the 2018 World Under-20 silver medalist, led the way in the junior high jump with Kelly acing the junior shot put.
Lecky and Kelly are now expected to be named in the Irish squad for the European U20 Athletics Championships in Boras, Finland.
Lecky soared over at 1.80 metres to take high jump gold by a comfortable margin.
Kelly had little trouble in the shot, the St Johnston man reaching out to 16.72m and only denied a whopping 18.01m effort by the narrowest of infringements.
There was also an impressive display by Finn Valley’s Oisin Gallen, with the US-based scholarship student claiming bronze in the U23 1500m. Gallen cruised into the medal positions in 3:51.94 and was pipped to bronze by Swinford’s Shane Bracken.
Youghal’s Fearghal Custin took the gold in 3:49.54.
Finn Valley’s Shane Irwin, who was recently selected as part of the Irish squad for the European U23 Championships in Sweden, took bronze in the U23 400m. Irwin finished in 48.19 seconds.
Tir Chonaill AC’s Caolan O’Callaghan was the silver medallist in the U23 triple jump. O’Callaghan leapt to 13.77 metres with City of Lisburn’s Mark Burton taking gold with a 14.23m attempt.
Bridget McDyer of Finn Valley won silver in the U23 weight for distance event. McDyer threw out to 5.32m, beaten only by Michaela Walsh from Swinford’s 6.40m.
Letterkenny AC’s Niamh Kelly left with bronze from the U23 3000m race. Kelly finished in a time of 10:05.77 and was just behind Castlecomer’s Lauren Dermody and Aisling Kelly of St John’s.
Lifford-Strabane AC’s Darryl Crawford was fourth in the U23 weight for distance and fifth in the javelin, Finn Valley’s Janine Boyle was fifth in the U23 100m final, while Alan McGinley of Lifford-Strabane qualified for the U23 1500m final.
