Since that excellent voluntary work of the first Board, B&S Credit Union has continued to flourish over five decades and has created a community financial co-operative which serves almost 13,500 members in its common bond with an asset size over €60million.
B&S Credit Union has experienced two changes of currency, and premises, since its inception, moving into the current premises on Main Street Ballybofey in 1999.
The premises were extensively renovated in 2017 and are now a secure, confidential and comfortable premise for both members and staff.
B&S Credit Union have a voluntary Board of Directors and a board oversight committee who direct and oversee the running of the Credit Union.
B&S Credit Union currently employs 20 staff, 8 full time and 12 who work part-time, and they also have a pool of volunteers who serve on various committees.
At the start, it was people who put their savings together and who worked voluntarily to manage their monies and create a lending pool.
That was back in the 60s. Credit Union communities have grown rapidly, and they are now recognised as financial institutions where people save monies and borrow on a par with banks, albeit on a smaller scale.
B&S Credit Union have not been approved for mortgage lending yet but they are actively engaged in personal lending for a multitude of purposes.
B&S Credit union are still open to new members who live or work in their ‘common bond’ area which covers a geographical area from Glenfin/Cloghan to Convoy to Castlefin to Killygordan to Drumkeen and up into Barnes Mor.
They try to keep the lending process as simple as possible but have to also satisfy regulatory requirements from the Central Bank.
Loans range from a few hundred euros up to 50,000 – people borrow for Cars, Holidays, Home renovations, Education and so on.
