BARRY MCNAMEE hopes to follow an illustrious band of men to have captained Derry City to League Cup glory on Saturday night.
McNamee is aware of the honour of captaining the Candystripes – and could lift silverware at the Brandywell this weekend.
First, though, Derry have to navigate the task of treble-chasing Dundalk in Saturday’s EA Sports Cup final.
“We’re under no illusions about how tough it will be, but we’ll go and give it our all,” McNamee told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.
“We’ve been told all week about the game being sold out. It’s a big game between two big sides.
“We took them to extra time and hit the bar in the last minute of normal time, but they showed their experience from the years of success that they’ve had. We’ll learn from that. We drew with them twice so there’s been nothing between the teams.”
The 27-year-old returned to Foyleside in January having spent the 2018 season at Cork City.
Derry have won the League Cup 11 times in the past – including last year’s 3-1 win at home to Cobh Ramblers.
Declan Devine’s side are also firmly in the hunt for a European sport.
McNamee said: “Regardless of what happens on Saturday, it’ll be a big end to the season for us.”
