Gardai urge caution as local authorities make preparations for Storm Lorenzo

Gardai in Donegal are urging motorists to be extra careful when driving on the road as Storm Lorenzo prepares to hit the county.

Donegal, who will be under two yellow weather warnings tomorrow (Thursday), is expected to escape the worst of the storm.

An Garda Síochána in Donegal have also urged motorists to drive safely and leave extra time for their journeys.

A spokesperson said: “Please do take precautions when out driving as conditions will be windy and wet.

“There is a possibility that trees may fall as the ground is wet and the roots are weakened at this time of the year so any impact at all may cause them to collapse.

“Be on the lookout for any bins that might blow onto your path and be careful in case you hit any pools of water on the road as these may cause aquaplaning.

“This occurs when a layer of water separates your tyre from the road surface. Please check that your tyres are in a roadworthy condition.”

They concluded: “Drive using dipped headlights as visibility may be poor!”
