LETTERKENNY hot rod driver Drew Russell is celebrating after being crowned points champion last weekend in Tipperary.

The 2019 season drew to a close at the Tipperary Raceway and Russell ended the campaign as the points champion in the Open RWD Slick Car class.

Russell, who now lives in Drumkeen, was second in the Open Championship in the summer.

Hailing originally from Derryveagh Avenue in Letterkenny and a son of Drew and Molly Russell, Drew competes in a car based in a Peugeot 205.

It is, he says, a ‘well-dated’ car, but he has had fine success in recent years.

In 2018, he was secnd in the Open and second in the Open Slick Cars Points Championship. In 2017, he was the Coolronan Raceway points champion and was also named as Entertainer of the Year

Russell developed his love of hot rod racing from a young age when he remembered attending stock car races at Woodlands.
