Rise in number of unplayed games, GAA convention hears

ALMOST 11 per cent of adult matches in Donegal were not played in 2019.

Outgoing Competitions Controls Committee (CCC) secretary Declan Martin presented the statistics as part of his report to the annual county convention.

A total of 67 walkovers were awarded in 2019, with 13 of those in Division 1 Reserve, 11 in Division 2 Reserve and 10 in the senior hurling league – 50 per cent of the total of games in that competition.

“A total of just less than 11 per cent of all Leagues matches were not played, this is up from 10 per cent in 2018,” Mr Martin said.

“In relation to Reserve and Third team games, a total of 17 per cent were not played, which is a reduction of 13 per cent from 2018. 

“The Senior Hurling League had the biggest percentage of games not played with 50 per cent of games not played.”

The number of walkovers per Division in 2019 was as follows:  Division 1 – 3, Division 2 – 1, Division 3 – 1, Division 4 – 6, Division 1 Reserve – 13, Division 2 Reserve- 11, Division 3 Reserve – 0, Division 4 Reserve – 0, Division 5 – 0, Regional League 1 – 6, Regional League 2 – 14, Senior Hurling League – 10, Junior Hurling League – 2.

There were a total of 626 games played across the various Divisions in 2019.
