Photographer turns to art to capture marine litter in a new light

Donegal photographer Karen Skelly has taken creative steps to highlight the problem of litter on her local beach.

After finding huge deposits of litter and plastic on Rossnowlagh beach this week, Karen decided to frame them in a new way.

Karen took photos of each item and came up with sayings to remind people to clean up their own rubbish. Karen’s collage and posters are already making an impact on social media and she is hoping the people near all coasts can get the message.

Karen said she had never seen a haul of litter as big as she did on Tuesday.

“There is a great group that keep the beach clean but this all came in on the high tide and is deposited on the high grassy verge, from high heels to milk bottles etc,” Karen said.

Karen said she hopes that her pictures and slogans will motivate farmers and beach goers to be mindful of the impact that littering has on our seas.

“They actually are made to look pretty quite arty but there is a warning and reminder with each of the reality of our local seas scattered with everyday plastics. Honestly, I walk it every day and I’ve never seen such a haul,” she said.
