Met Eireann’s weather station at Finner in Donegal had the highest above-average temperature readings in the country last month.
January temperatures were above average across Ireland in 2020. They followed a similar trend to Europe, which was the hottest January on record.
Mean temperatures deviated the most at Finner in south Donegal. The average temperature was 7.0C – a 1.8% increase above the monthly average.
Malin Head recorded the lowest sunshine levels of the month, with just 33.9hours of sunshine at Ireland’s most northerly point.
Wind speeds were also highest at Malin Head, with the average reading of 19.2 knots (35.6 km/h) recorded at the weather station.
Storm force winds were reported on the 13th during Storm Brendan. Across the state, the number of days with gales ranged from zero days at a few stations to 11 days at Malin Head.
