IRISH Tug of War Federation President Dan McCarthy has predicted that the 2020 World Tug Of War Indoor Championships – which begin in Letterkenny tomorrow – will be ‘spectacular’.

Teams from 13 countries will take part in the Championships, which are being held in the Aura Leisure Centre over the next four days.

“The event will be spectacular and people will not be disappointed with what they see,” McCarthy told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“There is a great centre here and we have had great co-operation from everyone. The Aura is ideal for these Championships.”

The initial idea for Letterkenny to stage the Championships was made by Clonmany’s Tug of War veteran Danny McGonigle.

“Danny has been an inspiration in Clonmany for over 40 years,” McCarthy said.

“At his request, we went to the TWIF Congress and there was a tender submitted. All the countries vote on the tender and it was voted on in April 2016 in Belfast. We were delighted to see that we were successful.”
