A new plan is being sought to transform a misused park in one of Letterkenny’s largest residential areas.
The Ballyboe Linear Park at Glencar is not in a suitable state to serve the local community, according to local councillor Jimmy Kavanagh.
Cllr Kavanagh told the council this week that the park has been the scene of anti-social behaviour incidents, trees have been torn down and the space is used as a “drinking den”, particularly in the summertime.
While the park is well looked after by the council, Cllr Kavanagh said that development is needed to so that it can reach its full potential.
He is seeking collaboration between the council, local residents, residents associations, Tidy Towns and elected members to address ongoing issues.
Cllr Gerry McMonagle backed the call and said the park is a “jewel in the crown of the concrete jungle that is Glencar”. He also highlighted the lack of football facilities in the area which forces the Glencar Celtic team to host their home games in Rathmullan each week.
Cllr Kavanagh’s motion was passed and, as a result, the council is set to facilitate a meeting with the members and the Resident’s Association in the area should they wish to submit their proposals for the park. The Council will then explore options available in terms of funding, etc to progress any proposals to redevelop the park.
