Listen: Delight for Eamon McConigley as Letterkenny Rovers book Cup final spot

LETTERKENNY Rovers manager Eamon McConigley admitted he was worried before Saturday evening’s Knockalla Caravans Senior Cup semi-final.

McConigley’s fears were eased as his team defeated derby foes Bonagee United 3-0 at Dry Arch Park to dump the holders out of this season’s competition.

The win saw Letterkenny bounce back after a 6-3 USL defeat by Derry City Reserves two weeks earlier.

“I’m delighted, especially after such a disappointing performance against Derry,” McConigley told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“We didn’t give a true account and I was really worried about this game. I was worried how they would bounce back.

“It wasn’t an easy game in terrible conditions, but we kept at it and got the goals. We were always going to be hard to break down when we got a two-nil lead and we defended well.”

An early own goal set Rovers on their way with Kevin McGrath and Ryan Lonergan also on the mark.

The win over their cross-town rivals ensures Letterkenny have a Cup final to look forward to at the season’s end.

McConigley said: “We won’t throw the League up just yet. We’ll see how far we can get and this is a great boost for us.”
