Councillor says Letterkenny landlords should freeze rents for businesses

A former Mayor of Letterkenny has called on landlords to stop charging rents for businesses until the coronavirus is tackled.

Dozens of shops and businesses have been forced to lock their doors on fitted-out shops, bars and restaurants in the Cathedral Town.

Like many across the county, they simply don’t know when they will be able to trade again.

And now Councillor Gerry McMongale says landlords must play fair if they want their tenants to come back.

“The very least they should be doing is to be engaging with their tenants and understand the difficulties that are currently experiencing and will in for the foreseeable future.

“Afterall banks are offering a mortgage freeze for the next three months,” he said.

The Sinn Fein councillor added “We must all work together for the good of the whole community and do what it takes to help us all get through this both physically and emotionally.”

He added that a freeze on rents is also something that Donegal County Council should be considering for their tenants.
