MANAGEMENT at a Donegal school have been forced to issue a fresh warning about people gathering on their playing pitch.
The move comes after a group of over a dozen young people were pictured on the pitch at Errigal College in Letterkenny yesterday evening.
Shocked passers-by say those involved looked to have been taking part in an ‘organised’ gathering – which had nothing to do with the school.
One concerned person told Donegal Daily: “I was passing when it seemed to be coming to an end and children were getting into cars outside the school grounds.
“I couldn’t believe it after everything that has been said in the last few days. Whoever is responsible for this should be ashamed of themselves and the parents also need to ask themselves what they were doing.”
This came just hours after Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced what he said were ‘unprecedented actions’ in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Schools and childcare facilities will remain closed until at least April 19, while non-essential retain businesses and facilities – including theatres, gyms, hairdressers, clubs, betting offices, marts and libraries – were ordered to shut from midnight.
Varadkar said gatherings outside should be of no more than four people – which was clearly being flouted soon afterwards.
A message later posted on the Errigal College Facebook page said: “Our pitch is closed due to the #Covid-19 pandemic, not only to our own students but to anyone who uses it. #StayatHome, save lives, keep your distance.”
