Watch: John Kelly raising his marks during Covid-19 shutdown

DONEGAL shot put star John Kelly is putting the Covid-19 lockdown to good use.

Kelly should have competed at the European Throwing Cup in Leiria, Portugal, but it was postponed and the global shutdown of sport has left a cloud of uncertainty around all athletes.

Kelly, though, has been honing his skills at his St Johnston home.

The Finn Valley AC man has been improving rapidly of late and last year reached a distance of 18.50m while competing in Leiria – a new best.

Earlier this year, Kelly set a new Ulster Donegal and Finn Valley indoor record.

His next aim is to reach over the 19-metre mark.

Among his practice throws in Carrickmore this week was a 20.38m effort, albeit throwing the lighter 6.8kg shot.

Iceland’s Guðni Valur Guðnason, whom Kelly has worked hard with in Reykjavík, was clearly impressed, commenting: ‘WOOAAHHH’.
