Covid-19 pandemic to result in Foyle Cup cancellation

THE 2020 Foyle Cup is set to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Organisers will make a final decision next week, but admit the prospects of proceeding are low.

The competition first began in the early 1990s and has swelled in popularity.

However, it seems as if the 2020 version will not be going ahead.

“If we are being honest at this stage, we do not think it will be going ahead,” the Foyle Cup committee said.

“Government are talking now, even before we come to terms with first phase of this virus, stating the second phase could be even worse.

“There are many considerations which we have to take into consideration – the main consideration being the health, safety and well being of our kids, coaches, managers, referees, parents and family members.

“Added to this we believe social distancing is here to stay for some considerable time – well into 2021.”

The committee noted the potential difficulty in having medical personnel available for games and insurance cover, the cost of which could be prohibitive.
