Relief as widow of Donegal man recovers from Covid-19

The wife of the late Donegal man John McGroddy has made a full recovery from Covid-19, her family has confirmed.

The recovery has brought great relief to the family after the sad passing of their father John on March 29th.

Mr McGroddy, a native of Carrigart, passed away at the age of 82 after testing positive for coronavirus last month. He and his wife Nell (aged 72) were both residents of the Tara Winthrop Private Clinic in Swords, Dublin.

John, a former Garda who was stationed in Dublin, still has many members of his family living in Donegal, including his sister Winnie.

Nell was too unwell to attend her husband’s funeral as she was also battling the coronavirus. Their five adult children were unable to visit them at the care home and could only watch through a window as Nell said her final goodbye to John at the end of March.

The McGroddy family have this week confirmed that their mother has got over the illness and is doing well.

A new fundraiser has been set up in gratitude for the first-class care that the couple received at the Tara Winthrop Private Clinic.

Dominick Mc Groddy, the eldest of John and Nell’s five children, set up the ‘Nice things for Nursing Homes’ GoFundMe campaign to treat staff and residents of local nursing homes.

Dom wrote: “My lovely Dad died of Coronavirus in a nursing home and we couldn’t be with him. Thankfully mum has recovered from this awful condition.  We are truly thankful to the wonderful staff at their nursing home, who held our dad’s hand when he died, and who continue to support mum every hour of every day.”

Dom and his two children have recorded two music videos to support the campaign and have so far collected over €5,000.

Dom added: “My children wanted to do something to raise some money to buy some nice things for their nan, the other residents and the super, caring staff. So whatever we get will go to buy some appropriate nice things for their nan, and other residents, as well as for the wonderful staff who are working so hard through this dreadful time.  Every penny will go to buy lovely gifts (mostly nice food we reckon :-)) for the residents and staff, for nursing homes.”
