Judge forced to issue Covid-19 overcrowding warning

April 30, 2020

A Donegal judge was forced to issue an overcrowding warning to people attending Letterkenny Circuit Court this week.

Judge John Aylmer was forced to address the courtroom at Letterkenny Courthouse after a number of people attended the ‘call-over’ of cases.

A number of cases were due to be addressed and relatives or friends of those involved had turned up in court.

As well as members of the public, the courtroom also contained solicitors, barristers, Gardai, prison officers, court staff, translators and members of the media.

However, Judge Aylmer said he had concerns that those attending the court could not comply with social distancing in line with Covid-19 guidelines.

He requested anybody who was not directly involved in the case being heard to leave the court and to wait in the lobby of the courthouse.
