Watch: Donegal pupils support life-changing gift campaign

Two Letterkenny schoolboys are lending a helping hand to Mary’s Meals as the charity launches a thoughtful ‘Present for my Teacher’ fundraiser.

Global school feeding charity Mary’s Meals’ new charity gift will help children in Ireland thank their teachers during lockdown by providing life-changing school meals in classrooms around the world.

www.presentformyteacher.com is where parents and guardians can buy an online gift for their children’s teachers in exchange for a donation towards the work of Mary’s Meals Ireland.

It’s really two presents in one – a beautiful e-card that kids can safely send to their teacher by email, and the promise of daily school meals for children in some of the world’s poorest communities.

Joshua from Lurgybrack NS and Donnchadh from Gaelscoil Adhamhnáin both star in a promotional video to get the word out about the gift project.

Patricia Friel, Executive Director of Mary’s Meals Ireland and a native of Ramelton said: “In these uncertain times, the need for Mary’s Meals in the poorest communities is greater than ever.

“Present for my Teacher is a safe and easy way to show appreciation for the teachers keeping lessons going during lockdown here in Ireland. Children can thank their teachers with a thoughtful gift that provides life-changing school meals for children living in poverty around the world..”

Mary’s Meals works with local communities in 19 countries to provide school meals, which are cooked and served by local volunteers. The promise of a nutritious meal encourages hungry children – who might otherwise have to work, scavenge, or beg for food – to come to school and gain an education, which can offer them a route out of poverty.

Donations of any amount are gratefully accepted, it costs just €18.30 to feed a child for an entire school year and at least 93% of all donations are spent on charitable activities.

It’s a simple idea that works. In schools where children receive Mary’s Meals, enrolment goes up, fewer children skip lessons or drop out of school, students find it easier to concentrate in class and exam results improve. While schools around the world are closed because of Covid-19, Mary’s Meals staff and volunteers are working round the clock to deliver emergency food to families, so parents can cook Mary’s Meals for their children at home, in their temporary place of education.
