Court hears of man’s brutal assault on former girlfriend

June 30, 2020

A Lifford man who brutally assaulted his former girlfriend has been told by a Judge that he may well be going to jail.

Jordan Porter appeared at Letterkenny District Court facing a number of charges.

Many of the charges included breaking a barring order which had been taken out against him from visiting the family home at Butcher Street in Lifford.

However, the most vicious assault was against a former girlfriend whom Porter subjected to a horrific and unprovoked attack.

Pictures of the young woman after the attack and a medical report on her injuries were handed into Judge Paul Kelly.

The court was told how on August 25th, 2018, the young woman called to see Porter at his flat at Main Street in Lifford.

But for no apparent reason, Porter shoved her towards the ground and got on top of her and pinned her shoulders to the ground by kneeling on top of her.

With a closed fist he then punched the helpless woman four or five times in the face before he then headbutted her twice.

Porter kept confronting the terrified woman and accused her of telling lies.

She finally managed to flee but not before Porter had also smashed up her iPhone.

Porter also admitted breaching a barring order at his mother Tracey’s home on numerous dates.

On one of these occasions, on August 30th last year he came to the back door of his mother’s house and asked if he could come in as it was raining and his bus was not due.

When his mother refused to let him in he called her a “fat c***” and told her that he would kill her if she called the Gardai.

On January 2nd last, Gardai were called to the Accident and Emergency Department of Letterkenny University Hospital where Porter was intoxicated and was abusing people before he was arrested.

His solicitor Patsy Gallagher said his client suffered from mental health issues but he had no excuse for such a vicious assault on his former girlfriend and he apologised for that.

He said Porter is now engaging with the mental health services and is sharing a house at Balyraine Park in Letterkenny and “seems to be doing well.”

Judge Paul Kelly noted that the majority of all the charges occurred while Porter was out on bail.

He said he would like to hear from both his victims, his mother and also his former girlfriend before sentencing.

Judge Kelly warned that because of the viciousness of the assault and the fact that many of the offences were committed while he was on bail, Porter may well be facing a custodial sentence.
