Records tumble as John Kelly breaks new ground in Sweden

JOHN Kelly broke yet more new ground with a record-breaking throw yesterday in Sweden.

Kelly set new Ulster, Donegal and Finn Valley AC shot put records while competing in Växjö.

The St Johnston man reached out to 18.62 metres.

Kelly’s new mark sees him better the 18.51m he set in Leiria, Portugal, last August and it is also better than the 18.61m with a 6kg shot he threw for an Irish Junior record in 2015.

“John has worked consistently at home in St Johnston all throughout the Covid-19 pandemic,” former Irish Olympic Team Manager Patsy McGonagle told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“He never lost focus at any time and this is a signal of his resilience and determination to get competition and improve.

“He is chasing 19m, that challenge is there and he will achieve it.”

Yesterday’s open throws meet in Växjö was won by Norway’s Marcus Thomson, who threw 20.75m while Sweden’s Viktor Gardenkrans was second in 20.75m.
