Impressive win for Sommer Lecky in Belfast

SOMMER Lecky leapt to a superb gold last night in her season-opener in Belfast.

The Finn Valley AC star won the women’s high jump at the City of Lisburn Invitational.

The 2018 World Junior silver medalist jumped clear at 1.84 metres to announce the start to her campaign in style.

Lecky was fifth last year in the European Under-20s and last night was her first competition in several months.

Clearly, though, the Castlederg woman – who is coached by Niall Wilkinson – maintained a good focus during the Covid-19 lockdown. Lecky is now targeting the 2020 National Senior Championships in Santry.

Lecky jumped a PB of 1.90m in Tampere, Finland in 2018 when winning World U20 silver

Last night, Kate O’Connor from Newry jumped 1.75m for silver.

Finn Valley AC’s Janine Boyle was fourth in the women’s 100m, finishing in 12.36 seconds. Sarah Quinn from Mayo won the race in 12.02 seconds,

There was also a seriously impressive win for Adrianne Gallen of Lifford-Strabane AC in the women’s hammer throw.

Gallen and Lynsey Glover from Lagan Valley AC shared the gold medal with Gallen’s 57.41m effort, using a 3kg hammer, a notable triumph.
