ALTHOUGH it hasn’t been pretty, Martin McElhinney is delighted that St Michael’s have achieved their first 2020 objective of reaching the knockout phase of the championship.
“At the end of the day that’s what we want,” McElhinney told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.
We didn’t get through to the quarter-finals last year and we felt we were very unlucky. We drew with St Eunan’s on the last day and we were very disappointed not to get out. This year, the main thing was getting to the quarter-finals, no matter what.”
Ardara will have left Dunfanaghy cursing themselves, but St Michael’s did enough for a third successive weekend.
They did so here without a number of key personnel.
McElhinney said: “We weren’t good in the three games and we were lucky to win. Sometimes you can play well and get beat or not play well and win.
“We’re missing a lot of players, seven or eight players we’d consider as starters and boys who have been here for years. They’re massive losses. The young lads are really stepping up. We always feel that we have a strong enough squad.”
