A 42-year-old Donegal man will stand trial on a child sex charge.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared for a brief hearing at Letterkenny District Court.

The man is charged with engaging in a sexual act with a child under the age of 17.

The charge relates to an alleged incident in London in 2018.

Gardaí gave evidence of the arrest, by way of arrangement. When charged and cautioned, the accused replied: “I’m innocent.”

The DPP has consented to the accused being returned for trial and also consented to the accused being sent forward or sentence on foot of a signed plea of guilty, should this arise.

The man did not speak during the short hearing.

The defendant’s passport has been surrendered and has been ordered not to interfere, directly or indirectly, with any witnesses in the case.

Judge Deirdre Gearty granted bail on the accused’s own bond of €100.

The case was adjourned for mention at the September 15 sitting of Carndonagh District Court.
