Plans lodged for €60M wind farm outside Letterkenny

Planning permission is being sought for the development of a new wind farm at Drumnahough Mountain.

SSE Renewables and Coillte are seeking planning permission from An Bord Pleanala for Drumahough Wind Farm, located near the townlands of Cark, Meenadaura and surrounding areas to the south-west of Letterkenny and north-west of Ballybofey.

A notice, published today, details that the applicants are seeking a ten year planning permission and 30 year operational life from the date of commissioning.

It is proposed that the wind farm will consist of 12 No. turbines and will have a maximum export capacity of circa 60 MW. The development also comprises the on-site construction of a 110m Meteorological mast and associated foundation hardstand area and ancillary main crane hardstand area.

Planning consent was previously secured at the site in 2009, which has now expired following issues with grid connection. The new planning application for Drumnahough Wind Farm has a revised site layout and includes fewer turbines.

Construction work on the wind farm was planned to commence in summer 2023 for the site to be fully operational in late 2024.  The project is expected to create up to 60 jobs during construction.
