Large amount of oysters, winkles stolen in Donegal

GARDAÍ in Donegal are probing substantial thefts of seafood in separate incidents in the county in the last week.

A large quantity of oysters were stolen from a shore at Quigley’s Point and a volume of winkles were removed from Magheroarty beach.

Last Thursday, November 26, between 10am and midday, over 230 pre-graded oyster bags were taken from a remote shore area in Quigley’s Point.

The theft of the recently-harvested oysters from the shore of Lough Foyle has left the owner at a ‘substantial loss’.

Between November 27 and November 30, six bags of winkles, which had been gathered by a local man, were removed from Magheroarty beach.

A Garda spokesperson said this harvest was ‘worth quite a lot of money’.

Gardaí are exploring ‘several avenues’, but the two incidents are not believed to be linked.

Anyone with any information on either incident is asked to contact An Garda Síochána.
