Donegal will be putting a purple spotlight on disability tomorrow in celebration of the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD) and the timely launch of Donegal Disabled Peoples Organisation (DPO).
Tomorrow, December 3rd is International Day of Persons with Disabilities and Donegal County Council will be joining the rest of the Country lighting Public Service Centres and various other Council buildings purple to celebrate the resilience of people with disabilities both in Donegal and Internationally.
As part of the celebration of IDPWD, the Independent Living Movement Ireland (ILMI) launched the Donegal Disabled Peoples Organisation (DPO) on Tuesday, the 1st of December 2020.
The Donegal DPO is the voice of disabled people in county Donegal and should be a point of contact for statutory, community and voluntary agencies such as county councils, public participation networks, local development companies, HSE etc.
The event was launched on zoom, speakers included: Peter Kearns, ONSIDE Project Manager & St Angela’s NUIG Lecturer in Disability Equality Studies, Damien Walshe, ILMI CEO, Teresa Butler, Community Development Worker, Leitrim Development Company and representatives of Donegal DPO.
Disability academics and activists Colin Cameron and Maggie Cameron were the guest speakers at the event. Colin lectures at St. Angela’s NUIG on Disability Equality Studies and Maggie is a former Training Co-ordinator for Self-Directed Support Scotland.
The Donegal DPO aims to bring disabled people collectively together to bring about a more inclusive and equitable community.

Anyone can show their support tomorrow by wearing something purple or by sharing the purple glow and using the campaign hashtag #PurpleLights20 on social media.
