Holmes hails mature Tyrone after narrow win

COLLIE Holmes hailed the maturity of his Tyrone minors as they eked out an Ulster MFC win over Donegal in Ballybofey on Sunday.

Five points by Ruairi Canavan sealed a 0-8 to 0-7 win for the Red Hands.

Holmes, a three-time All-Ireland winner, saw his side kick 13 points, but they prevailed by the minimum after finding a way,

“We have good drive and good organisation,”  Holmes said.

“We have a steady spine. The lads are mature and can organise themselves.”

Tyrone had a 25-minute scoreless streak and had to come from two points down to win.

After goalkeeper Harry Morgan knocked over a ’45, Canavan’s brace sealed the deal for Tyrone.

Holmes said: “A goal would have put anyone’s lights out. It was about not conceding a goal really. It was a tough contest and if we had lost 0-9 to 0-8 we’d have no complaints.

“It was a good stiff contest with two teams going at it.

“All the boys put in a shift there. They all did their bit. All you want to do is do your part and everyone stepped up.”
