THE start of the 2021 League of Ireland season looks set to be delayed until March while the return to training for inter-county GAA teams is ‘under review’.
The League of Ireland season was due to begin in late February, but the ongoing uncertainty around Covid-19 and also the financial supports available to clubs means the date will now be pushed back.
LOI clubs benefitted from a rescue package in 2020 after the return to action behind closed doors. For a brief spell, a limited amount of fans were permitted, but in the main the games after the re-start were played in front of empty terraces.
Clubs would usually be ready for a return to pre-season action in the coming days.
However, the League’s clubs are set to convene this week to discuss their options. There is a reliance on financial support, particularly with no supporters permitted to games.
Senior inter-county GAA teams were se tot return to training this week with training initially flagged as being able to commence again on January 5.
However, members were advised yesterday that the date was ‘under review’ due to the growth rates in transmission of Covid-19.
The 2021 Allianz Leagues are set to begin on the last weekend in February.
