Restrictions put kind couple’s orphanage appeal on hold

A local couple’s Belarusian orphanage appeal has been postponed for the first time in a decade due to Covid-19.

Each January, Ramelton couple Myrtle and Alan Doherty have inspired a community to donate essential items to help children and adults in need in Eastern Europe.

The Dohertys put in great time and effort to organise coordinate collections from across Donegal. At the end of the month, they would arrange a pick-up lorry for goods to be  sent to Belarus to benefit adults and children at the Vesnova children’s orphanage, many of whom have been affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

However, current restrictions and the health situation has forced the appeal to be postponed for this month. Alan and Myrtle, putting health and safety first, said they hope to host the collection later this year.

“We will not be collecting for Belarus at this time as it would not be safe or responsible,” says Myrtle.

“When the situation hopefully settles down later in the year, we will do a collection then. For anyone who has anything gathered for us, please hold onto it until further notice as we cannot accept anything at the minute. Thank you all for your understanding and your continued support.”
