TWO Ballyshannon men will drive a 21-year-old jeep to Mongolia as part of a unique fundraising venture

This summer, Stephen Timbs and Paul McClean plan to take a Suzuki Jimny from Ballyshannon to Mongolia and back.

Their venture is to raise money for Connect Mental Health and Cool Earth.

“Depending on the route taken, the total distance driven is around twelve thousand miles with a estimated trip time of 6-8 weeks,” Stephen told Donegal Daily.

“No support team is provided and no other arrangements are made such as for accommodation, maintenance, or fuel.

“If we get stuck or in trouble, we are on our own!”

Connect Mental Health is community mental health organisation promoting positive mental health in Donegal through an annual programme of events, online workshops and supports delivered directly to young people and adults in the local community.

Cool Earth aim to save rainforests and all their partnerships are community-owned and led. By developing local livelihoods, their mission is to end the cycle of deforestation entrenching villages into further poverty.

Cool Earth is now working alongside 113 rainforest villages throughout the world.  These partner villages are protecting over 900,000 acres of forest that lie directly in the path of chainsaws and bulldozers.

Stephen and Paul have set up a GoFundMe page for donations: https://www.gofundme.com/f/mongol-rally-2021-in-aid-of-charity
