Chefs and the league of volunteers behind ChefAid Donegal have been celebrated in the 2021 HerStory Light Show.

The team behind the food outreach project were included in a special illumination show on St Brigid’s Day in honour of all Covid Heroes in Ireland. A recording of the display was shared on social media yesterday for all to see.

Watch here, with ChefAid featuring after one minute:

ChefAid started in March 2020, when Jo Daly and her chef Tim Twomey, along with two other chefs in the area, Adrian McDaid and Sinead McTernan set out to ensure people cocooning at home did not go without a hot meal. Local businesses rowed in behind them, €26,000 was raised to help the team and An Garda Siochana jumped onboard to help coordinate daily deliveries. The idea was a major success which motivated other groups to do the same. Soon there were eight pods operating in communities all over Donegal.

The far-reaching impact of the service led to ChefAid being nominated for inclusion in the HerStory 2021 light show honouring Covid heroines and heroes from local communities, as well as people at the heart of key stories from the year, including Mother and Baby Homes and Black Lives Matter.

The Covid Heroes section of the show saw a photo of the core ChefAid team beamed onto Galway City Museum.

The image, kindly taken by photographer Matt Britton, features Jo Daly, Marcus Pearson, John McGroary, Angela Ward, Tim Twomey, Adrian McDaid, Anthony McMenamin and Sinead McTernan
