CHILDREN’S shoes will be added to the list of ‘essential’ retail items, it has been confirmed.

Ireland’s Health Minister, Stephen Donnelly, made the announcement today.

“I am clearly of the view that they need to be added to the essential retail list, specifically for children’s shoes,” he said.

“The acting Chief Medical Officer [Ronan Glynn] and I have spoken about it this morning and it is something I fully support and want to see implemented immediately.”

People will need to make appointments online or over the phone.

It has been stressed that the planned opening of shoe shops is not to cater for adults who wish to purchase new shoes.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said:  “It’s very specific to children, very specific to the needs of children and growing children.

“We will be providing for that in guidance and in regulations that will be published shortly.”
