Gardaí are warning the public to be aware of a scam that is targetting people claiming there is a warrant out for their arrest.
These fake calls are carried out by fraudsters purporting to be calling from the Department of Social Protection or other official Departments.
Often coming from (083) numbers, these callers may inform you that there is an active arrest warrant for you. They will then try to ascertain your PPS number and other personal details. Often the call is an automated style call and you are requested to press a digit to speak to someone in person.
Gardaí in Donegal are asking people not to provide any details and hang up: “Please do not engage with this type of call. Hang up. Never provide personal or financial details over the phone to anyone. If you have fallen victim to this scam, please alert your financial institution immediately and also report the matter to Gardaí.”
