‘Scandalous’ – Taoiseach to meet Attorney General on Mica crisis

AN TAOISEACH Micheál Martin has labelled the Mica crisis as ‘scandalous’.

Martin made a hastily arranged and low key visit to Donegal on Thursday evening, during which he visited a Mica-affected family, the Murtaghs in Raphoe.

On Tuesday, thousands of Donegal people are expected to take part in a protest in Dublin, calling for a 100 per cent redress scheme.

In an interview with today’s Sunday Independent, Martin – whose visit also included a meeting with the Mica Action Group – confirmed that he will meet with the Attorney General to explore how the Government will deal with the issue.

“I am very angry. It’s on a scale that is absolutely shocking,” he said.

Martin mention that insurance companies could be held to account and added: “We will be looking at those other issues. I am not going to say anything too specific until I work through it and talk to the Attorney General in terms of what is happening here.”

Thousands of Donegal families have been affected by the MICA scandal which has seen houses literally crumble because of faulty building blocks.

Last month, over 10,000 people marched at demonstrations in Letterkenny and Buncrana to demand a 100 per cent redress scheme.
