ELEVEN athletes from Donegal clubs have been included in a NI & Ulster team for the Manchester International on August 18.

Former World Under-20 silver medalist and Commonwealth Youth Games gold medallist Sommer Lecky is included in the senior team.

The Finn Valley AC high jumper is joined in the senior squad by Finn Valley shot putter James Kelly and Lifford-Strabane duo Brendan O’Donnell (hammer) and Gareth Crawford (javelin).

Cara Laverty, who last week broke a 33-year-old Finn Valley AC record, goes in the under-20 team in the 800m.

Letterkenny AC’s Ryan Canning, a gold medal winner last night at the National Juvenile Championships, is included for the U20 400m hurdles.

Lifford-Strabane AC star Adrienne Gallen goes in the hammer throw in the unde-20s, joined by club-mate Cormac O’Donnell, also in the hammer.

Finn Valley duo Sean McGinley (1500m) and Lauren Callaghan (long jump) are also in the under-20 squad while their club-mate Hannah Murray is in the 4x400m u20 women’s squad.

Finn Valley AC’s John Rogan is included as a team coach.

The team is spearheaded by four Commonwealth Games athletes and a further four athletes who have European or European Para Championships experience.

“We’re delighted to give them an opportunity to get a chance to compete,” said Dermot McGranaghan, the Finn Valley clubman who was an Ulster selector. “With Ireland not sending a team to the World Under-18 Championships, this is a great chance for international competition.”
