One of Donegal’s most famous cafes is to close its doors for the last time on Saturday night after serving the Donegal public for more than 70 incredible years.
Baskins Cafe in Dunkineely has been a stopping point for generations of Donegal families who were always guaranteed a fine meal.
Now owners Thomas and Frances Baskin have decided to call it a day after Thomas’ parents set up the cafe in Rathmullan in the 1950s before moving to Dunkineely in 1958 and then Thomas and Frances took over the cafe in 1978.
The last orders will be taken at the cafe just before 10pm when it closes its doors this Saturday night, August 28th.
With Thomas and Frances now in their 70s, the couple have decided to close the doors of the famous cafe as they prepare for a well-earned retirement.
“Thomas and Frances have worked so hard over the years since setting up the cafe here in 1978.
“They are most thankful to all the excellent staff whom they say they were lucky to work with over the years and also to the many thousands of loyal customers.
“They are looking forward to a rest now and so they have decided to close the doors of the cafe for now. But hopefully they won’t remain closed for too long,” said a family spokesperson.
