THE Cloughaneely GAA club have led the tributes following the death of Packie Doohan.

In an emotional tribute, the Pairc Naomh Fionnan club remembered ‘one of our most loved stalwarts’.

A former player, Packie was part of the first Cloughaneely team to win a Donegal Junior Football Championship title in the 1950s.

Packie’s death comes just a month after the passing of his brother Danny and less than a year after the death of another brother, Alfie.

In a tribute, Cloughaneely GAA club said: “The club are saddened to hear of the sad passing of one of our most loved stalwarts Packie Doohan.

“The Doohan family have always been a prominent, loyal and widely known presence within our GAA circles for generations.

“Packie proudly donned the Cloughaneely jersey in his day, where he was an integral part of the first Junior Championship winning team in the late 50’s; a force to be reckoned with on the playing field alongside his brother Eddie.

“Packie is the father of Stephen and Dan, both prominent managers, coaches & committee members within the club and brother to Josie, our club Vice-President & Trustee.

“His sad passing comes just one short month after the passing of his brother Danny and less than one year after his brother Alfie; who were also both faithful Gaels who are sadly missed.

“He was a steadfast supporter of all our club fundraisers and was among the first to sponsor a sod in the club’s recent ‘Buy a Sod’ fundraiser for our new pitch.

“Just a few short months ago Packie proudly attended the blessing of our new pitch alongside his brothers Josie & Tony.

“A true gentleman and a true Gael; his presence will be surely missed around the pitch where he supported his own sons during their playing days and where he, in more recent years, stood by and watched with pride as his grandchildren now don the club colours.

“We wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Doohan family and wider family circle; in particular to his loving wife Veronica, with whom he recently celebrated 60 yrs of marriage, his sons, daughters, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law and grandchildren; Brothers Josie, Eddie, Tony, Christy and his sister Kathleen

“Ar dheis lámh Dé go raibh a anam uasal Gaelach.”
