GARDAÍ in Donegal have issued a warning over illegal fireworks as Halloween approaches.

Igniting an illegal firework, throwing an ignited firework at a person or property and possessing illegal fireworks with intent to sell or supply are all offences.

Fireworks are not only dangerous, there are severe criminal penalties that apply: Up to €10,000 fine & 5 years imprisonment.

“We all need to work together to ensure that Halloween and the lead up to it is safe yet enjoyable for everyone,” a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said.

“It can be a fun time of the year but for many it is far from fun because of the misbehaviour of but a few.

“The illegal use of fireworks can and does cause great distress to older people, families and pets. We urge all parents to speak to their children about the risks associated with firework use.

“Many people sustain horrific burn injuries in the run up to and during Halloween week each year as a result of fireworks.

“Fireworks are illegal. Please act responsibly and alert Gardaí if you come across the use or sale of fireworks.”
